Full Day Tours: Revash & Museo de Leymebamba

The archaeological site of Revash is a sample of the funerary culture of the Chachapoyas people. The site is made up of a series of mausoleums which resemble rectangular houses with peaked roofs. Each house shelters mummified bodies of Chachapoyas leaders and contains intricate designs of animals printed on the walls and rocks which show admiration and respect for the environment, and provides insight into Andean cosmovision and their knowledge of astronomy. The mausoleums are nested in a fissure high up in a cliff wall and face a deep canyon overlooking an expansive green valley.  It can be visited by taking a car/bus to the villages of Santo Tomas and San Bartolo and then a pleasant .9 mile (1.4 km) walk at an altitude of 8,694 ft (2650 m) above sea level.

Surprisingly, Leymebamba museum, which is set on a high hillside in a remote town, contains the largest collection of mummies in the world (219 mummies). This very unique museum in Peru offers samples of the Inca and Chachapoyas culture as well as showcasing the influences of the Spanish colony on pre-Hispanic cultures. This lovely museum and its grounds and gardens were built in 2000 to protect the mummies from looters. Accompanying collections of ceramics, quipus, looms, and musical instruments, among others items were found in mausoleums which resemble small rows of houses clinging to a cliff face in the rocks that surrounded Condor Lagoon. The museum has received substantial economic and cultural contributions from prestigious universities around the world and is visitor friendly and ready. Before entering the museum we will visit a cafe tucked in a beautiful jungle setting to enjoy a delicious Peruvian coffee with close up views of endemic hummingbirds which like to feed in the surrounding gardens. To visit the Revash and Leymebamba Museum we take the road from Chachapoyas to the district of Leymebamba. Both are part of a full day tour, and we recommend the use of comfortable sneakers with good grip to safely navigate varied terrain, as well as sunscreen, a hat or cap, sunglasses, a rain jacket, pants, a long-sleeve shirt, sweater, and insect repellent. The altitude is 7,080 ft (2,158 m) in Leymebamba and 8,694 ft (2,650m) in Revash, with cold winds.
